eTail: JW Marriot Palm Springs

Why eTail West Might Be the Best Ecommerce Event in the U.S.

Hot take: eTail West might be the best annual ecommerce event in the U.S. - and after attending for the first time, it’s easily my favorite to date.

Going in, I had a general sense of what to expect. But the reality exceeded it - not because of any single factor, but because of how everything comes together.

The question is simple: why does it work so well?

Location Sets the Tone

Palm Springs in February is hard to beat.

While much of the country is dealing with winter, you’re walking into 70° weather, sunshine, and a completely different pace of energy. That alone changes how people show up - more open, more social, more willing to connect.

It doesn’t feel like a typical conference. It feels like an environment designed for interaction.

The Venue Isn’t Just a Venue

The JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa is a big part of the experience.

This isn’t a convention center - it’s a full resort:

  • Golf courses
  • Pools and spa
  • Restaurants and bars
  • Endless places to meet

But the real X-factor?

The Lobby Bar

From early morning coffee to late-night conversations, the lobby becomes the unofficial center of gravity for the entire event.

Some of the best conversations - and the start of many relationships and deals - happen here, not in scheduled sessions.

The Right Balance of Scale

One of the hardest things to get right with events is size.

  • Too big → overwhelming and transactional
  • Too small → limited opportunity

eTail West hits the middle:

  • Large enough to meet new people constantly
  • Small enough that you run into the same people multiple times

That repetition matters - it turns introductions into real conversations.

The Ecosystem Shows Up

The mix of attendees is what you’d expect - but more importantly, it’s balanced:

  • Brands
  • SaaS platforms
  • Agencies
  • Operators
  • Investors

Everyone is there for the same reason:

To solve real ecommerce problems and move things forward. That alignment makes conversations more meaningful and less surface-level.

What Happens Outside the Conference Matters Just as Much

Like most major events, there’s plenty happening beyond the scheduled agenda - but here, it actually feels integrated into the experience.

Some highlights:

  • BMW performance driving
  • Surfing at Palm Springs Surf Club
  • Golf
  • Desert and pool parties
  • Dinner events and smaller group meetups
  • Joshua Tree, hiking, and more

These environments tend to create better conversations than formal settings.

Final Thoughts

If events exist to build relationships, exchange ideas, and create opportunities, then what separates a good event from a great one is how naturally those things happen.

eTail West stands out because it removes friction:

  • The environment is right
  • The scale is right
  • The people are aligned

The result is simple: more meaningful connections, more productive conversations, and real momentum coming out of the week. Great connecting with so many people this week - and already looking forward to next year.
